Hugo Kronecker: A Pioneer in Physiology
Hugo Kronecker, a German physiologist, was the brother of renowned mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891).
Early Life and Education
Kronecker pursued his studies in Heidelberg and Berlin. Subsequently, he joined the laboratories of Kühne and Ludwig in Leipzig.
Academic Career
Kronecker was appointed as an extraordinary professor in Leipzig in 1875. In 1877, he moved to the Physiological Institute in Berlin. In 1885, he became an ordinary professor of physiology in Bern.
Scientific Contributions
Kronecker's research encompassed a wide range of physiological topics, including:
- Cardiac irritability and function
- Respiratory innervation- Sources of animal heat
- Swallowing mechanisms
- Protein assimilation
Notable Discoveries
Kronecker identified the coordinating center for heart contractions and introduced a novel perspective on the physiology of olfaction.

From 1881-1885, Kronecker co-edited the "Centralblatt für die medizinische Wissenschaft" with Senator.
