Youth and Family

Karl I was born on August 17, 1887, in Persenbeug Castle, Austria. As a member of the Habsburg dynasty, he was born fifth in line for the throne. However, a series of unexpected events, including the deaths of Emperor Franz Joseph I's only son and brother, placed Karl as the heir presumptive to the throne.

Rise to the Throne

With the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, Karl became the immediate heir to Emperor Franz Joseph I. In November 1916, the 84-year-old emperor passed away, elevating Karl I to the throne of Austria-Hungary. At the time of his accession, the empire was already in a state of collapse.

Challenges and Leadership

Karl I found himself in a difficult position upon becoming emperor. Both the military and political situations were dire. He personally commanded the troops in an attempt to gain support from the Hungarians and was crowned in Budapest in December 1916. Despite his efforts, the empire collapsed in November 1918.

Abdication and Exile

After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary, Karl I announced that he was "relieved from the exercise of government," but did not officially abdicate. He made two failed attempts to reclaim the Hungarian throne in 1921 and was subsequently exiled to the island of Madeira in November of that year.

Death and Legacy

On April 1, 1922, Karl I succumbed to pneumonia. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003. Karl I was married to Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma in 1911. They had eight children, the eldest of whom, Otto, became the head of the Austrian imperial house.
