Biography of Carl Panzram
Carl Panzram was born in Minnesota in 1891 to immigrant parents from Germany, John and Matilda. He grew up on a farm, where he was required to do a lot of hard physical labor. Coming from a large family, Carl had five brothers and one sister. When he was 7 years old, his parents divorced. At the age of 11, he stole from a neighbor's house and was beaten unconscious by his brothers as punishment. In 1903, he ended up in a reform school for teenagers. Panzram later claimed that it was in this institution that he learned to lie excellently and became much more cruel. Physical punishment was the norm in the reform school, and Carl, who was repeatedly beaten and humiliated, decided to seek revenge for his suffering.
In July 1905, at the age of 14, he set a simple device on fire and burned down the workshops at the school. According to Panzram, it was in this school that his hatred for people and extreme harshness began to form. He insisted that his mother enroll him in a regular school when he was 14. However, his time there was short-lived. After a dispute with a teacher who punished him several times, he brought a gun to school with the intention of killing the teacher in the classroom. But the plan failed, as the gun was knocked out of Carl Panzram's hands. Following this incident, he was expelled from school, after which Carl Panzram left Minnesota for good, hitching a ride on a freight train.
A Life of Crime
As a runaway, young Carl became a wanderer, traveling on freight trains, surviving by begging and stealing. During this time, he claimed to have been brutally raped by four hobos. After a while, he was arrested for burglary and sentenced to one year in a reform school. In 1907, Carl successfully escaped from the school with another teenager. As he grew older, Carl consciously chose an extremely antisocial criminal lifestyle for himself. He engaged in theft, robbery, arson, and the rape of men and boys.
In August 1920, he robbed the home of former US President William Taft. As a result of this robbery, Panzram came into possession of a considerable sum of money, which he spent on buying a yacht. He later hired sailors under the pretense of working on the yacht, only to rape and murder them. He then traveled to Africa, where he lured six local inhabitants into the jungle under the guise of helping him hunt crocodiles. He fed the corpses of those he killed to the crocodiles.
The Execution
Carl Panzram was sentenced to death by hanging by the court. On September 5, 1930, the sentence was carried out. His last words to the executioner perfectly illustrate the essence of his personality: "Hurry up, you Hoosier bastard! I could kill a dozen men while you're screwing around!"
