Early Life and Succession
Carl was born as the eldest son of Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, and Princess Louise Caroline of Hesse-Kassel. Upon his father's death on February 27, 1831, he inherited the ducal title.
Marriage
On May 19, 1838, Carl married Princess Vilhelmine Marie of Denmark, the daughter of King Frederick VI and Queen Marie Sophie of Hesse-Kassel. The ceremony took place at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Vilhelmine Marie had been previously married to Prince Frederick of Denmark (later Frederick VII), but the marriage had been annulled due to Frederick's excessive drinking and infidelity. Carl, on the other hand, proved to be a dedicated and loving husband.
Involvement with Denmark
Carl was closely related to the Danish royal family, being the elder brother of King Christian IX of Denmark. However, he had a strained relationship with Denmark due to his opposition to the country during the First Schleswig War. This opposition damaged his reputation among the Danish public.
Later Life and Death
Carl spent his later years with his wife in Luisenlund, Denmark. He passed away on October 24, 1878, at the age of 65. He left no heirs, and his wife had no children from either of her marriages. It is speculated that Vilhelmine Marie may have been infertile, as there are no records of miscarriages or stillbirths during her pregnancies.
