Karl Wilhelm von Kupffer was a renowned German anatomist, histologist, and embryologist. Born in Courland, he pursued his medical studies at the University of Dorpat, where he became a disciple of the esteemed Friedrich Bidder. In 1854, he attained his doctorate in medicine.

Academic Pursuits

From 1856 to 1866, Kupffer served as a prosector and associate professor at his alma mater. Subsequently, he held positions as a full professor at the University of Kiel (1866-1876), the University of Königsberg (1876-1880), and the University of Munich (1880 onwards).

Scientific Contributions

Kupffer made significant contributions to descriptive and comparative anatomy. Notable among his works are the joint investigations conducted with Bidder on the structure of the spinal cord. Additionally, he conducted pioneering research on the liver, leading to the discovery of Kupffer cells. These specialized macrophages play a crucial role in capturing and recycling old and non-functional blood cells.

Honors and Recognition
