Early Life and Education

Carl Wimar, a celebrated German artist renowned for his depictions of Native Americans and the American West, was born in Germany. In 1834, when Wimar was 15 years old, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in St. Louis, Missouri.

Apprenticeship with Pomarede

In 1846, Wimar commenced his studies in painting under the tutelage of Leon Pomarede. Together, they embarked on a journey along the Mississippi River, providing Wimar with invaluable artistic experience.

Training at the Düsseldorf Academy

In 1852, Wimar relocated to Germany to pursue further artistic training at the esteemed Düsseldorf Academy of Art. There, he studied under Emanuel Leutze, a celebrated painter of American historical scenes.

Return to St. Louis

In 1856, Wimar returned to St. Louis, where he established his artistic career. His paintings primarily focused on scenes of buffalo herds, the lives of Great Plains inhabitants, settlers' wagon trains heading west, and the customs of Native American tribes.

Missouri River Explorations

In 1858 and 1859, Wimar embarked on two extensive expeditions up the Missouri River and subsequently down the Mississippi River. During these journeys, he immersed himself in the lives of Native American communities, observing their traditions and customs firsthand.
