A Latvian Military Leader Under the Shadow of War
Hugo Martin Ota was a Latvian military leader who held the rank of Standartenführer in the SS during the Second World War. Born in Riga, he completed his education at the Petrov City Gymnasium and subsequently worked as an accountant.
Joining the Ranks
In 1915, Ota enlisted in the Imperial Army. After the war, in 1918, he joined the newly formed Latvian Army. Despite Latvia's incorporation into the Soviet Union, Ota managed to avoid political persecution.
The SS and the Occupation
When Latvia was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941, Ota joined the Latvian Legion of the SS. During a fierce battle near the Blue River Bridge (village of Mozuli), he sustained a severe abdominal wound. Faced with the prospect of capture, Ota tragically took his own life.
