Born into a Slovak family in 1806, Kuzmány attended the gymnasium in Dobšiná and the prestigious University of Jena in Germany. There, he was greatly influenced by renowned philosophers and scientists, including Jakob Fries.

Ordained as an Evangelical Lutheran pastor in 1829, Kuzmány actively participated in both religious and political affairs. He became the vice-president of the Slovak Matica (1863-1866), a cultural and literary organization.
