Early Life and Career in the Dominican Republic
Kat DeLuna was born in The Bronx to Dominican parents. At a young age, she moved to the Dominican Republic with her family. Kat made her first stage appearance at the age of 12, where her singing caught the attention of Millie Quezada. Despite her vocal talent, Kat struggled to develop her abilities in the Dominican Republic.
Return to the United States and Breakthrough
At age 14, Kat returned to the United States and began pursuing her musical aspirations in Newark, New Jersey. With the guidance of vocal coach Nicholas Straus, she honed her skills and joined the R&B group 'Coquette'.
In 2004, Kat won a 'Coca Cola' karaoke contest, where she met salsa singer Rey Ruiz. He encouraged her to find her own sound, leading Kat to start writing her own music. In 2006, she signed a contract with 'Epic Records'.
Debut Album: '9 Lives'
Kat's debut single, 'Whine Up', was released in 2007. Despite mixed critical reviews, it became a commercial success. Her debut album, '9 Lives', followed in August 2007, reaching number 58 on the 'Billboard 200' chart.
Critical Performance and Second Album
In 2008, Kat's performance of the national anthem at a football game was met with negative feedback. She was listed on 'Billboard's' '10 Worst National Anthem Performances in History'.
In 2009, Kat announced her second album, 'Inside Out'. It was released in 2010 in Belgium after releasing several singles.
Upcoming Projects
Kat DeLuna's latest single, 'Wanna See U Dance', was released in 2012. It is the lead single from her upcoming album, 'Viva Out Loud', which is yet to be released.
