She received her education at the University of Missouri and then taught at a school for disabled children for two years. It was there that she met the school's director, Robert Capshaw, whom she married in 1976 and took his surname. In the same year, Kate gave birth to their daughter, Jessica, but divorced four years later.
Desiring a career as an actress, Kate moved to New York, where she began appearing in TV commercials and taking acting and vocal lessons.
