Early Life and EducationKate Dillon-Levin was born on March 2, 1974, in Washington, D.C. Her father, Tom Dillon, was a scientist, and her mother, Carol Dillon, was a school teacher. She has an older brother named Dan. When Kate was ten, her family moved to San Diego, California. In her teenage years, she faced bullying due to her weight. After watching a documentary at the age of 12, Kate became determined to lose weight. This led to an eating disorder that lasted for seven years. Despite this, she graduated from La Jolla Country Day School and was accepted into the University of California, Berkeley. However, Kate decided to pursue a career in modeling instead.
Modeling Career
Kate's modeling journey began when she was discovered by a photographer in San Diego at the age of 16. She started working in Los Angeles immediately after receiving her high school diploma. In 1991, Kate placed third in the 'Elite Model Look' competition and won a contract worth $75,000. She worked with renowned photographers such as Richard Avedon and Peter Lindbergh. Kate appeared in campaigns for brands like Chanel, Christian Dior, L'Oreal, and Bergdorf Goodman. She posed for magazines such as Mademoiselle, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour. She also walked the runways for designers like Alberta Ferretti, Emporio Armani, Fendi, and Salvatore Ferragamo. However, in 1993, Kate decided to leave her career to recover from her eating disorder and find a new path in life.
Plus-Size Modeling
When Kate returned to New York City in 1995, healthy and confident, a friend suggested that she try plus-size modeling. She immediately signed with Wilhelmina Models agency. In 1996, she became the face of 'Elizabeth' by Liz Claiborne and participated in the Playtex advertising campaign. In 1998, Kate was named Model of the Year by Mode magazine. Richard Avedon chose her as his first plus-size model, capturing her in various feminine roles, including Aphrodite, for the Avenue campaign. In 2000, she also appeared in Gucci's spring advertising campaign. Kate continued her successful career, working with companies such as Nine West and Marina Rinaldi.
Activism and Education
In 2010, Kate wrote several articles for glamour.com on the topic of eco-friendly fashion and lifestyle. At the age of 28, she enrolled at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, graduating with a degree in political science. She then pursued further education at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, earning a master's degree in public administration and international development.
