Early Life and Education

Catherine Dreier was born in Brooklyn, the youngest of five children of German immigrants. She studied painting at the Brooklyn Art School and later at the Pratt Institute in New York City.

欧洲之旅

From 1907 to 1914, Dreier traveled extensively through Europe and studied at art schools in Germany, France, the Netherlands, and England. She exhibited her work during this period and had her first solo show in London in 1911.

Общество независимых художников

Upon returning to New York, Dreier became involved with the Society of Independent Artists, where she met Marcel Duchamp in 1916.

Анонимное общество

In 1920, Dreier, Duchamp, and Man Ray founded the Société Anonyme (SА), an experimental museum and exhibition space dedicated to promoting avant-garde art.

Выставки и Коллекция

Over the next three decades, SА organized numerous exhibitions featuring works by artists from around the world. Dreier's passion for collecting led her to accumulate a vast collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

Поздние годы

In 1941, Dreier donated part of her SА collection to Yale University. She continued to work on the society's catalogue, which was published in 1950.

Наследие

Upon her death in 1952, Dreier's collection formed a major part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The Société Anonyme's exhibitions and collections played a pivotal role in introducing modern art to the United States.
