Early Life and Education

Kathleen Kennedy was born on June 5, 1953, in Berkeley, California. Her mother, Dione Marie "Dede" Dousseau, was a former actress, while her father, Donald R. Kennedy, was an attorney and judge. Kathleen graduated from Shasta High School in Redding in 1971 and went on to study film and television production at San Diego State University.

Early Career in Television

During her senior year of college, Kennedy landed a job at KCST television station, where she gained a wide range of experience as a camera operator, video editor, floor manager, and eventually production coordinator for the news department. After leaving KCST, she produced the local talk show "You're On" before moving to Los Angeles.

Collaboration with Steven Spielberg

In Los Angeles, Kennedy began working as a production assistant to John Milius on Spielberg's war comedy "1941." Although her role in the film's credits was listed as assistant picture editor, Spielberg was impressed with Kennedy. He hired her as his secretary, soon discovering her keen eye for production and lack of typing skills.

Kennedy's association with Spielberg led to her becoming an associate producer on Tobe Hooper's horror film "Poltergeist" (1982). She received her first sole producer credit on the runaway hit "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" later that year.

A Hollywood Luminary

Kennedy's collaboration with Steven Spielberg continued throughout the Indiana Jones franchise, notably "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981). She rose to prominence as one of Hollywood's leading producers.

Executive Producer and Lucasfilm President

Kennedy has worked with an array of directors, including Martin Scorsese, Robert Zemeckis, Barry Levinson, and Clint Eastwood. She served as executive producer on Spielberg's blockbusters "Jurassic Park" and "Schindler's List."

In 2005, she produced Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" and "Munich," receiving an Academy Award nomination for the latter. On October 30, 2012, Kennedy was named president of Lucasfilm and brand manager of the entire "Star Wars" franchise after The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm. Her first project in this capacity was "Star Wars Episode VII," released in July 2015.

Recognition and Awards

In 1995, Kennedy received the Women in Film Crystal Award for her contributions to expanding the role of women in the entertainment industry. In 1997, she was the inaugural recipient of the Paltrow Mentorship Award, honoring her support of emerging filmmakers and producers.
