The Young American Woman Who Discovered Her Pregnancy an Hour Before Giving Birth
23-year-old American woman, Katie Kropas, stated, "I thought I had just gained weight over the Christmas holidays" when she discovered her pregnancy just an hour before giving birth... Katie Kropas from Weymouth, Massachusetts, was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain. To determine the cause of her excruciating stomach spasms and back pains, she underwent an ultrasound. The examination revealed that Kropas was nine months pregnant and ready to give birth at any moment. "I finished the ultrasound," recalls Katie, "and then they told me something like, 'Your due date is now, and you are about to give birth'". She found out at 10:15 am and gave birth at 11:06 am. Her daughter weighed 4.5 kg at birth!
A Surprising Pregnancy
The new mother confessed that she had no idea how her pregnancy could have gone unnoticed. Katie insists that she used contraception until the birth of her daughter, whom she named Ellen Olivia, along with her boyfriend. Furthermore, Kropas claims that she did not experience any disruptions in her menstrual cycle. "At that moment," says Kropas, "it felt like someone was playing a joke on me, but I had no idea what to think. I don't know what answer I was expecting. But I think due to my work, constantly being on my feet, and the busyness of Christmas, this news caught me off guard."
A Supportive Boyfriend and Grandmother
After Katie's longtime boyfriend learned about her pregnancy, he immediately began searching for her mother so she could support her daughter and not miss such a crucial moment. Karen Kropas, Katie's mother, recalls, "He told me, 'Karen, she's nine months pregnant, and we didn't know she was having a baby.' And then I said, 'Ha-ha-ha, let me talk to Katie,' and he responded, 'Karen, I'm serious. How quickly can you come?'" The new grandmother admitted that she had heard stories similar to Katie's before but never took them seriously. When it happened to her own child, Karen believed that "it's real, it's true, and it happens."
Unusual Pregnancy Symptoms
One of Katie's doctors from the South Weymouth Hospital confirmed that sometimes first-time pregnant women do not know how to identify their condition based on symptoms. Even the most obvious signs of pregnancy are often overlooked by many expectant mothers. "They don't perceive these symptoms," explains Dr. Kim Dever.
The Joy of a New Family Member
The Kropas family is currently preparing to bring baby Ellen home. The baby's parents will have to visit numerous stores to buy essential items for their daughter, from a crib to diapers. Despite the initial shock of Katie discovering her pregnancy at such a critical moment, she and her boyfriend are now filled with joy at the arrival of the new addition to their family. "Today, we're all having fun," says Katie, "and I feel like this is just the beginning."
