Early Life and Education
Janet Kay Haygan (née Ruthven) was born in Shelby, North Carolina. She spent the majority of her childhood in Lakeland, Florida, and also spent summers on her grandparents' farm in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Haygan earned a bachelor's degree from Florida State University in 1975 and a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1978.
Pre-Political Career
Prior to entering politics, Haygan worked in the financial industry. She became a vice president at NCNB (National Carolina National Bank), North Carolina's largest bank, which is now part of Bank of America.
Political Career
North Carolina Senate (1999-2009)Haygan served in the North Carolina Senate from 1999 to 2009, representing the 24th district. She made a name for herself as a moderate Democrat and was known for her work on education, healthcare, and economic development.
U.S. Senate (2009-2015)
In 2008, Haygan was elected to the United States Senate, becoming the first woman to represent North Carolina in the upper chamber. She served on several key committees, including the Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee.
