Biography of Kai Hansen

Kai Hansen is a renowned rock musician from Germany, known for his skills as a guitarist and vocalist. He is widely recognized as the founder of the power metal genre and is the founding member of the bands Helloween and Gamma Ray. Hansen has also been involved in other projects such as Iron Savior.

Early Life and Career

Kai Hansen was born on January 17, 1963, in Hamburg, West Germany. He began his musical journey at the age of fifteen when he joined the relatively unknown heavy metal band Fist. After the band disbanded, Hansen went on to form Helloween, where he served as the main songwriter and lyricist. Despite not being a professional vocalist, Hansen also provided vocals on Helloween's debut albums, "Helloween" and "Walls of Jericho." His distinctive vocal style, featuring high-pitched falsetto, became influential within the power metal genre.

Gamma Ray and Other Projects

In 1988, Hansen left Helloween due to an extensive world tour in support of the album "Keeper of the Seven Keys" and formed a similar-style band called Gamma Ray, where he continues to play guitar and sing to this day. Additionally, from 1997 to 2001, he was a guitarist for the band Iron Savior. Hansen has also been involved in numerous side projects throughout his career.

Collaborations and Contributions

Hansen has contributed to various musical endeavors outside of his own bands. He assisted Blind Guardian in the recording of their albums "Follow the Blind" and "Tales from the Twilight World" as a third guitarist and performed a duet with Hansi Kürsch on the song "Valhalla." He also worked with the Swedish band HammerFall on a cover album featuring Helloween songs, with the duet "I Want Out" featuring Hansen and Joacim Cans being released as a single. Furthermore, Hansen played the role of the dwarf Regrin in Tobias Sammet's rock opera Avantasia.

Recent Performances

In 2005, Hansen collaborated with the German band Stormwarrior from his hometown of Hamburg and toured as a vocalist, performing classic Helloween repertoire from the album "Walls of Jericho." He further reunited with Stormwarrior in 2007 for performances at the Magic Circle Festival and Wacken Open Air festivals.
