Witold Rowicki

Witold Rowicki was a renowned Polish composer, conductor, cellist, and music educator.

Early Life and Education

Born in Warsaw, Rowicki studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Anatoly Brandukov. He specialized in cello and graduated with honors.

Musical Career

Chamber Music and Performance

Rowicki was a member of the Polish Quartet from 1930 to 1939 and later the Szymanowski Quartet from 1945 to 1947. During World War II, he performed in underground concerts in Warsaw, including with Eugenia Uminska's quartet.

Conducting and Leadership

From 1934 to 1939, Rowicki served as director of the Gdańsk Conservatory. After the war, he became the first rector of the Łódź Conservatory (1945-1947). He also served as director of the Gdańsk Philharmonic and Opera (1952-1957) and professor at the Academy of Music in Sopot. From 1957 until his death, he was director and principal conductor of the opera in Wrocław.

International Recognition

Rowicki concertized extensively as a cellist, performing in the Soviet Union for the first time in 1946. His exceptional musicality and technical proficiency earned him international acclaim.
