Biography of Kazimierz Alchimowicz
Kazimierz Alchimowicz was a Polish artist born in 1840. He completed his education in Vilnius and in 1863, he participated as a soldier in the anti-government uprising in Lithuania. As a result, he was exiled to Siberia. It was during his exile that Alchimowicz began to paint.
In 1869, after his return, Alchimowicz settled in Warsaw where he studied at the Drawing Class of the artist Wojciech Gerson. From 1873 to 1875, he continued his artistic education in Munich, and from 1876 to 1877, he lived in France, where he exhibited his paintings in Parisian salons.
From 1877 onwards, Alchimowicz primarily resided in Warsaw. In 1890, he began teaching at a private school of drawing and carving owned by B. Poswicka. Alchimowicz is considered one of the last Polish artists of the Romantic movement. He painted works on historical and mythological themes, landscapes of Lithuania and the Tatra Mountains, religious canvases, and genre scenes.
His work was exhibited in Warsaw, Munich, Odessa, Krakow, and Vienna. His painting "The Funeral of Gediminas" (1888) won awards on two occasions. In addition to painting, Alchimowicz was also interested in porcelain and faience painting, as well as wood carving. A large number of Alchimowicz's works are preserved in the Warsaw National Museum.
