Early Life and Education

Eduards Berklavs was born in LSSR, Latvia. His early education took place at the elementary school in Aizkalne and secondary school in Preili. He later graduated from the Latvian Agricultural Academy and the Republican Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia (CPSU).

Career in the LSSR

Berklavs' political career began in 1950 as an instructor and head of department for the LSSR Communist Youth League (LKSM). He held various administrative positions, including assistant and head of the Political Department of the Machine and Tractor Station. In 1952, he joined the CPSU.

He rose through the ranks, serving as secretary of the district committee, chairman of the district executive committee, and first secretary of the Viļāni district committee from 1957 to 1962. He then worked for the Committee of Party and State Control for the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the LSSR.

In 1964, Berklavs became first secretary of the Ogres district committee and later head of the agricultural department of the CPSU Central Committee of Latvia. From 1973 to 1980, he served as Minister of Agriculture of the LSSR.

Political Involvement

Berklavs was a member of the CPSU Central Committee of Latvia and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the LSSR for several terms (6th - 9th convocations).

Later Career

After retiring from politics in 1989, Berklavs became the director of the agricultural company "Mēlpils."
