Early Life and EducationOn November 26, 1949, Letizia Moratti was born in Milan, Italy, to wealthy parents Paolo Brichetto Arnaboldi and Paola Guida. She studied political science at the University of Milan and later served as an assistant professor to Fausto Pocar there.
Business Career
Moratti made a successful foray into the business world. In 1992, she became the first female board member of Banca Commerciale Italiana, and from 1994 to 1996, she was President of the broadcasting company RAI. In 1996, she purchased the Nicols group, and in 1998, she became President of News Corp Europe under media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
Political Career (2001-2011)
Moratti's political career began in 2001 when she was appointed Minister of Education, Universities, and Scientific Research in Silvio Berlusconi's second government. She held this position again in Berlusconi's third government from 2005 to 2006. Her most notable achievement in education was the so-called Moratti School Reform, which implemented significant changes to the Italian school system.
In 2006, Moratti successfully ran for Mayor of Milan, winning in the first round with 52% of the votes. She sought re-election in 2011 but lost in the second round to Giuliano Pisapia. During her tenure as mayor, she secured the hosting of the 2015 World Expo in Milan and introduced the Ecopass program, which imposed a surcharge on vehicles with polluting engines.
Return to Politics at Regional Level (2021)
In 2021, Letizia Moratti returned to politics as Deputy Governor and Regional Minister of Welfare for Lombardy.
Personal Life
Moratti married businessman Gian Marco Moratti in 1973. They had two children, Gilda and Gabriele. Moratti is the step-mother to Gian Marco's two sons from his previous marriage.
