Rost subsequently taught Russian literature at the universities of Amsterdam and Groningen.

Friendship with Joseph Brodsky

Rost cultivated a close friendship with the renowned Russian poet Joseph Brodsky. The two shared a deep appreciation for literature and often engaged in literary discussions and collaborations.

Literary Contributions

Rost made significant contributions to both Dutch and Russian literature. He translated works by Russian poets such as Innokenty Annensky, Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelstam, and Joseph Brodsky into Dutch. He also translated the memoirs of Nadezhda Mandelstam and the works of Andrey Platonov.

From Dutch, Rost translated the poetry of Guido Gezelle and Martinus Nijhoff into Russian. He authored a series of historical novels about the Russian poet Fyodor Tyutchev, including "Villa Bermond" (which won the Pyotr Vyazemsky Prize) and "Sonata 'The Storm.'" Rost also penned essays on the poets he translated and on the prose of Lydia Ginsburg, the poetry of Lev Losev, and Boris Ryzhy, among others.

Life and Legacy

Rost resided in Amsterdam and The Hague. His literary works and translations continue to be appreciated and studied by scholars and readers interested in Russian and Dutch literature.
