Kotomitsubaki: From Sumo Star to Disgrace
Early Life and Amateur SuccessKotomitsubaki, born into a sumo coach's family, began wrestling at a young age. As a student at Meiji University, he excelled in collegiate competitions, earning the unofficial titles of "Student Yokozuna" and "Amateur Yokozuna."
Professional Career
Kotomitsubaki's professional debut placed him directly into the third division, Makushita. After capturing his first tournament championship in 2001, he steadily climbed the ranks. In 2007, at the age of 31, he became an Ozeki, a rare late-career debut at such a high rank.
Known for Consistency
Kotomitsubaki was known for his stable performance, often posting 8-7 records. While this consistency prevented him from attaining Yokozuna status, it also hindered his advancement to Ozeki for many years.
Off-the-Mat Passions
Outside of sumo, Kotomitsubaki was an avid pachinko player. His love for gambling would ultimately lead to his downfall.
The Betting Scandal and Dismissal
In 2010, Kotomitsubaki became embroiled in a scandal involving sumo wrestlers gambling on illegal baseball games controlled by the Yakuza. As a result, he was dismissed from the Japan Sumo Association. Kotomitsubaki unsuccessfully challenged his dismissal in court.
Fighting Style
Known for his strength and power, Kotomitsubaki's sumo style was characterized by grappling, pushing, and throws. He lacked exceptional speed, but his consistency compensated for this disadvantage.
Post-Sumo Life
Following his dismissal, Kotomitsubaki has remained out of the public eye. He is married and has a daughter.
