Biography of Keith Carter
Keith Carter is an American photographer, educator, and artist known for his ethereal subject matter in his photographs. Born in 1948 in Madison, Wisconsin, Keith grew up in Beaumont, Texas, where his family moved when he was three years old. Raised by his mother, who worked as a photographer, Keith developed a fascination for the art form at a young age. He would quietly observe his mother's work, standing behind her and watching as images slowly emerged in the developing tray. This childhood interest never waned, and when the time came, Keith picked up a camera and began to pursue photography professionally.
Professional Journey
Keith started his career as a commercial photographer but gradually veered towards fine art photography. He began capturing the American South, gradually creating his own unique portrait of the region. Today, Keith Carter is one of the most respected photographers in America. He has authored numerous books, including "The Blue Man" (1990), "Bones" (1996), "Holding Venus" (2000), and "Opera Nuda" (2006), among others. In 1997, Keith released his milestone album, "Keith Carter Photographs — 25 Years," marking his 25-year-long contribution to the field of photography.
It is noteworthy that Keith Carter stumbled upon fine art photography in 1973 after visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he was profoundly moved by the power of photography. This experience ignited his desire to showcase the exotic beauty of his home state, Texas. He pursued his education at Lamar University, graduating with a degree in business management in 1970. Today, he teaches at the same institution and conducts seminars and workshops in various cities across the United States, as well as in Latin America and Europe.
Recognition and Achievements
In addition to his published books and monographs, Keith Carter exhibits his work and has his photographs featured in numerous public and private collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the George Eastman House, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. Notably, Keith Carter's talent has garnered the admiration of President Barack Obama and his wife.
In 2009, Keith Carter received the Texas Medal of Arts. A documentary film titled "The Photographers Series: Keith Carter" was made about his work in 2006. Among his other accolades is the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
