Early Life and Education
Köhler began his academic journey at the University of Tübingen in 1965, where he immersed himself in the fields of political economics and political science. His tenure as an assistant at the Institute of Applied Economic Analysis spanned the years 1969 to 1976.
Professional Career
Köhler's professional career commenced in 1976 at the Federal Ministry of Economics in Bonn. In 1982, he transitioned to the Federal Ministry of Finance. A decade later, he assumed the presidency of the Association of German Savings Banks and Giro Associations. Subsequently, from 2000 to 2004, Köhler served as the Managing Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London.
Political Affiliation and International Role
Since 1981, Köhler has maintained his affiliation with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). From 2000 to 2004, he held the prestigious role of Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
Presidency
In April 2004, Köhler was elected as the President of Germany, officially assuming office on July 1. He served until 2010.
