Kelvins Kiptoo: A Record-Breaking Marathon Legend
Early AccomplishmentsKelvin Kiptoo, the Kenyan long-distance runner and marathoner, began his international career in March 2019. His first significant achievement was a fifth-place finish in the Lisbon Half Marathon, clocking in at 59.54. In December 2020, he set a new personal best of 58.42, finishing sixth in the Valencia Half Marathon.
Marathon Debut and World Record
Kiptoo made his marathon debut in December 2022 at the Valencia Marathon. The then 23-year-old dominated the race, becoming the third person in history to run under 2:02 after Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele. His remarkable performance, with a second-half time of 60:15, secured him a fourth-place finish in the all-time world rankings.
Triumph in London
Kiptoo's impressive debut was followed by an even more remarkable victory in the 2023 London Marathon. He ran a time of 2:01.25, the second-fastest in history and a course record. Breaking away after 30 kilometers, Kiptoo finished nearly three minutes ahead of runner-up Geoffrey Kamworor.
Breaking Barriers in Chicago
On October 8, 2023, Kiptoo made history at the 45th Chicago Marathon. He shattered the world record set by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, running a blistering 2:00.35. Benson Kipruto finished second with a personal best of 2:04.02, followed by Bashir Abdi of Belgium in third (2:04.32).
Tragic Demise
On February 11, 2024, tragedy struck. Kiptoo was involved in a fatal car accident in Kaptagat, Kenya, along with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. Kiptoo was reportedly driving the vehicle.
