Biography of Kenan Sahin
Kenan Sahin is a Turkish scientist and entrepreneur from the United States. He belongs to the American-Muslim community, which proudly considers itself the "richest society on earth – Muslim."
Education and Academic Career
Kenan Eyüp Sahin graduated from Robert College in Istanbul with a Bachelor's degree in 1963. He then earned his Ph.D. in 1969 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and began teaching at the institution. Sahin also lectured at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Entrepreneurial Success with Kenan Systems
In 1982, Sahin founded the company "Kenan Systems" without external financing, investing his personal funds of $1,000. By 1999, the initially modest company had grown to employ over 900 people. In 1999, "Kenan Systems" was acquired by "Lucent Technologies." Sahin then became the President of the Software Products Group and Vice President of Software Technology at Bell Labs, a major telecommunications and research center. In December 2000, Sahin left Lucent.
Leadership at Technology & Innovation (TIAX)
In 2002, Kenan Sahin took over as the CEO of the consulting firm "Technology & Innovation" founded by Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1986. Under his leadership, the company transformed into a leading technology development firm, now known as 'TIAX.' The company had its headquarters in Lexington, Massachusetts, with business offices in Cupertino and Irvine, California.
Philanthropy and Recognition
In November 1999, Dr. Sahin donated $100 million to his alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the largest individual donation the university had ever received. He was recognized as one of the "40 Technology Pioneers of 2003" by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and received the first "Circle of Excellence" award in 2004 from the New England Business and Technology Association (NEBATA). In 2006, Sahin was honored with the 29th Annual "Golden Door" award from the International Institute of Boston.
Involvement in Nonprofit Organizations
Kenan Sahin served on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations, including the CoC Council on Competitiveness, Argonne National Laboratory, Boston Museum of Science, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Symphony, and the American Field Service. He is a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alumni Association.
Kenan Sahin is recognized as one of the wealthiest Muslim-Americans, having earned $1.45 billion from the sale of his company, "Kenan Systems." His name is mentioned alongside other Muslim-American business magnates such as Rashid A. Chaudhry, Yusef Haroon, and Nemir Kirdar.
