Biography of Kenneth Feinberg
American lawyerKenneth Feinberg was born in 1945 in Brockton, Massachusetts. He attended the University of Massachusetts, where he studied history. During this time, he developed a passion for theater and briefly considered a career as an actor. However, his interest in law eventually prevailed.
Education and Early Career
After graduating from the University of Massachusetts, Feinberg decided to further his education and enrolled at New York University School of Law. He completed his law degree in 1970 and began working as a prosecutor in the New York appellate court and later as a staff member for a senator. In 1993, Feinberg established his own firm, "The Feinberg Group," which quickly gained recognition for its specialization in defending manufacturers against consumer claims.
Defending Manufacturers and Handling High-Profile Cases
Feinberg became renowned for his ability to negotiate settlements and avoid trials. He successfully defended manufacturers in cases involving issues such as silicone breast implants, contraceptives, and other products. One of his most notable cases was the lawsuit brought by Vietnam War veterans against the Department of Defense for the use of defoliant, which harmed American soldiers. Despite public sympathy for the veterans, Feinberg achieved a settlement that satisfied both parties.
In addition to his legal work, Feinberg also gained experience in distributing funds. He oversaw the compensation fund for victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Appointment as Presidential Advisor
In 2009, Feinberg was appointed as a special advisor to President Barack Obama for compensation, with the responsibility of regulating the salaries of employees in companies that received government assistance. His role was to ensure that executive salaries were reduced and bonuses were limited. This earned him the nickname "Pay Czar" or "Salary Czar." Despite facing resistance from company executives and managers, Feinberg carried out his reforms in line with the goals and objectives of his position.
Awards and Personal Life
In 2004, Feinberg was honored as "Lawyer of the Year." He published a book in 2005 and had a road named after him in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts.
Kenneth Feinberg is married and has three children. In his free time, he enjoys listening to opera and classical music and smoking cigars.
