Biography of Kenneth Lee Salazar
Kenneth Lee Salazar, also known as Ken Salazar, was born on March 2, 1955, in Alamosa, Colorado. He is often referred to as a Latino-American, but he has Spanish roots. Salazar's ancestors settled in North America in the 16th century, long before the formation of the United States.
Childhood and Education
Salazar spent his childhood on a ranch in the San Luis Valley, about 500 kilometers from Denver. His parents, Henry and Emma Salazar, were former military personnel. Despite the lack of amenities such as running water, electricity, and telephone on the ranch, Salazar's parents were able to provide him and his siblings with a good education. All of their sons and daughters went to college. Salazar graduated from Centauri High School in 1973 and enrolled in St. Francis Seminary, but later transferred to Colorado College. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1977. In 1981, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Salazar later received honorary Doctor of Law degrees from Colorado College in 1993 and the University of Denver in 1999.
Legal Career and Political Journey
From 1981 to 1986, Salazar practiced law specializing in water legislation at the firm Sherman & Howard in Denver. In 1986, he became the Chief Legal Counsel to Colorado Governor Roy Romer. In 1990, Salazar was appointed as the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. He returned to private legal practice in 1994, working at Parcel, Mauro & Spaanstra until 1998.
In 1998, Salazar was elected as the Attorney General of Colorado and was re-elected in 2002. During his tenure as Attorney General, he focused on criminal justice issues, as well as land and water legislation and natural resource management. Salazar often clashed with the Republican leadership in the state over judicial appointments. In 2004, he ran for the United States Senate from Colorado as a Democrat and won against Republican candidate Pete Coors, taking office in January 2005. He became the first Senator of Hispanic descent to be elected from Colorado, not in the state of New Mexico.
In the Senate, Salazar served on the Finance Committee and was a member of the Agriculture, Energy and Natural Resources, Ethics, Veterans Affairs, and Aging Committees. He earned a reputation as a centrist and pragmatist, skillfully navigating between environmental organizations and resource extraction companies. Salazar supported programs for the rehabilitation of war veterans, voted for additional subsidies for farmers, advocated for immigration reform, and called for the gradual increase in oil and gas extraction in Colorado while protecting the environment and preserving public lands. He also called for the swift withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Association with President Obama
During his time in the Senate, Salazar became close with Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, as they were neighbors in Washington, D.C. Salazar actively supported Obama during his presidential campaign, campaigning for him in Colorado and New Mexico. After Obama's victory in the 2008 presidential election, Salazar served as an advisor in his transition team and was later nominated as the Secretary of the Interior. The Department of the Interior is responsible for the management of public lands, including national parks. Salazar was confirmed by the Senate and assumed office on January 20, 2009, immediately after Obama's inauguration.
As Secretary of the Interior, Salazar focused on combating climate change and ensuring energy independence for the United States. He aimed to improve the department's image, which had been criticized for its focus on western states. Salazar considered reducing the country's dependence on foreign oil as one of the nation's most important tasks. He also supported the development of alternative energy sources.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Salazar is married to Hope Salazar, and they have two daughters, Andrea and Milinda, as well as one granddaughter named Mireya. Before his election to the Senate, Salazar and his wife owned a chain of laundromats called Dairy Queen and two radio stations in Colorado. His older brother, John Salazar, is also a well-known politician and a former congressman. There were rumors that Obama would nominate John Salazar as the Secretary of Agriculture, but the position went to Tom Vilsack.
