Biography of Kenneth Singleton

Kenneth Jen 'Ken' Singleton is an American economist and a professor at Stanford University. He is widely recognized as a leading figure in empirical financial economics. Singleton's recent research on econometric methods for pricing asset dynamics has been highly influential in academic circles.

Singleton received his bachelor's degree from Reed College and his master's and doctorate degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin. He has been honored with the Smith Breeden Distinguished Paper Prize from the Journal of Finance, the Frisch Medal from the Econometric Society, and the Irving Fisher Dissertation Award. He became a member of the Econometric Society in 1988 and joined the editorial board of The Journal of Econometrics in 1998. Singleton has been a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1982.

In collaboration with Canadian financial economist Darrell Duffie, Singleton co-authored the book "Credit Risk," and he also wrote his own book titled "Empirical Dynamic Asset Pricing: Model Specification and Econometric Assessment." The economic journal Economic Dynamics praised "Empirical Dynamic Asset Pricing," stating that it sits at the intersection of contemporary time-series analysis and modern asset pricing theory. The journal went on to predict that Singleton's work would become a classic in the field. Singleton has also co-authored influential research papers with Lars Peter Hansen, Jun Pan, and Qiang Dai.

In addition to econometric methods for pricing asset dynamics, Singleton's research interests include modeling time-varying management structures and defaultable bonds, as well as evaluating and managing market, credit, and liquidity risks. He is also interested in debt financing in developing economies.

Singleton and Duffie jointly lead a program on credit risk management. Singleton is a member of the Consortium on Financial Systems and Poverty and a senior research fellow at the startup company Financial Crossing in Palo Alto. Financial Crossing provides mortgage solutions and liability management assistance for financial institutions and professionals. From 1991 to 1992, Singleton served as Vice President of the Portfolio Management Division for Fixed Income Securities at Sachs and Co. Starting in 2012, Singleton was set to assume the role of editor for the Journal of Finance. He currently serves as the President of the Society for Financial Studies.
