Early Life and Education

Kerry Gaye Smith was born on 21 December 1950, in Subiaco, Western Australia. She completed her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and later a Bachelor of Economics (B.Ec.) from the University of Western Australia.

Career in Finance and Port Management

After graduating, Sanderson joined the Western Australian Treasury, where she worked for 17 years. In the latter five years, she led the Economic and Financial Policy Division.

From 1991 to 2008, Sanderson served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Fremantle Port in Western Australia. Under her leadership, container trade increased fourfold.

Global Role in Promoting Western Australia

From November 2008 to December 2011, Sanderson was appointed as the Western Australian Government's Agent-General for Europe in London. She was instrumental in expanding exports from Western Australia and attracting investment.

Historic Appointment as Governor of Western Australia

In August 2014, Sanderson was announced as the next Governor of Western Australia, assuming office on 20 October 2014. She became the 32nd Governor and the first woman to hold the position.
