He comes from a family of a homemaker, Mary Ellen, and a portrait artist and investment worker, Paul Dillon, and is the younger brother of actor Matt Dillon.

He made his first appearance in the movie "Platoon" in 1986, where he portrayed the mentally unstable soldier, Bunny, in a remarkable performance.
