Kevin Garnett, born on May 19, 1976, in Mauldin, South Carolina, is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He achieved Olympic gold as a member of the USA national team in 2000 and was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2004.
Early Life and High School Career
Garnett spent his first three years of high school at Mauldin High School in South Carolina. He gained recognition as the National High School Player of the Year by USA Today and was selected to the Parade magazine All-America First Team after leading his team to the state quarterfinals. In his junior year, Garnett was named Mr. Basketball of South Carolina. He recorded impressive statistics of 25.2 points, 17.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 6.5 blocks.
Entry into the NBA
After four years of high school, Garnett declared for the 1995 NBA Draft. At the age of 19, he was selected as the 5th overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, becoming the youngest high school player to be chosen in the draft at that time. In his rookie season with the Timberwolves, Garnett averaged 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.64 blocks, ranking 15th in the NBA in blocks. He played in 80 games, starting in 43 of them, and set a rookie record with 131 blocks. Garnett was also named to the All-Rookie Second Team.
Current Career
After spending the majority of his career with the Timberwolves, Garnett joined the Boston Celtics in 2007. He played a crucial role in helping the Celtics win the NBA championship in 2008.
