Biography of Kevin Kern

American composer and pianist Kevin Kern was born as the fifth of six children in a family of a surgeon and a homemaker in Detroit, Michigan, USA. He began learning to play the piano at the age of four and started composing music at the age of eight. By the age of 14, he was already performing with a band that he had founded himself. Kevin was determined to become a professional musician despite being almost blind since birth and unable to read. In his childhood, he had the opportunity to meet the renowned jazz pianist George Shearing, who became his mentor and instilled in him a love for improvisation. In addition, Kevin continued to receive classical music education, graduating from the University of Michigan School of Music and the New England Conservatory, earning a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Performance degrees.
