Kevin Lima: An American Film Director
Early Career and EducationKevin Lima's journey in the filmmaking industry had an unconventional start. Despite applying to Disney three years prior, his initial attempt to join the animation giant proved unsuccessful. However, following a brief stint in Taiwan on the animated film "The Brave Little Toaster," Lima was encouraged by animator Glen Keane to reapply to Disney. This time, he was hired as a character animator, storyboard artist, and layout artist for films such as "Oliver & Company," "The Little Mermaid," and "Aladdin."
Transition to Directing
Driven by a desire to pursue directing, Lima left Disney for Hyperion Pictures, where he gained experience on the animated television series "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and films like "Bébé's Kids." In 1995, his dream of directing a Disney animated feature was realized with the release of "A Goofy Movie." Four years later, he helmed the blockbuster "Tarzan."
Return to Disney and Live-Action Success
Instead of resting on his laurels, Lima aspired to direct live-action feature films. After a brief search for projects outside Disney, he returned under the aegis of Glenn Close, who had worked with him on "Tarzan." This led to him directing the live-action "102 Dalmatians." Lima subsequently directed two made-for-television films, "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime," starring Julie Andrews.
"Enchanted" and Beyond
Lima's long-standing idea for the film "Enchanted" initially faced resistance from executives, who deemed it too dark and believed Lima lacked the comedic chops to execute it. After revising the storyline, the project finally saw the light of day in 2007 to critical and commercial acclaim.
Lima's subsequent work includes "Thumb," an adaptation of the board game "Candy Land"; "The Incredible Mr. Limpet," a remake of the 1964 film; "Avon Man" starring Hugh Jackman; and an untitled CGI-animated film for Sony Pictures Animation.
Current Projects
In 2011, DreamWorks Animation announced Lima's involvement in "Bollywood Superstar Monkey," an animated musical loosely based on the Indian epic "Ramayana." The screenplay is co-written by Gurinder Chadha and Paul Berges, with Stephen Schwartz composing the songs and Allah Rakha Rahman creating the score. The project has faced several delays in its release date, but Lima remains optimistic about its potential.
