In 1999, Schmidt relocated to New York and founded a musical collective. The group consisted of Mark Dresser, Liberty Ellman, Drew Gress, Elliot Humberto Kavee, John Hollenbeck, Nathan Hanson, and others. Together, Kevin and his team performed at various venues in New York City and events across the United States.

Musical Style and Technique
Schmidt is a highly talented composer who fearlessly blends colors and textures in his compositions. He often breaks down the ensemble into smaller groups and writes separate parts for them. His meticulously crafted compositions are interspersed with extended improvisational sections. Most of these improvisations are "free," meaning they are completely spontaneous group compositions and tend to be more melodic.
Kevin Schmidt's music is characterized by distinctive and occasionally whimsical melodies, refined rhythms, and a harmonious structure that evokes deep and varied emotions. Strong, intense notes give way to delicate nuances, dynamic and intricate passages dissolve into smooth melodies, and rich colors blend into unusual cocktails. In his performances, Schmidt utilizes the full range of the trombone, from the deep sounds of the tuba to the highest notes of the tenor trombone.
Kevin's multifaceted technique deserves special attention, although he employs his abilities in a secondary role to embellish musical ideas and express personal experiences through his music.
