Early Life

Kim Basinger was born in Athens, Georgia and grew up in a conservative household. She had two older brothers and two younger sisters. From a young age, Basinger showed an interest in ballet, but eventually gave it up. She was initially shy and quiet, leading her parents to believe she had autism. However, a psychiatrist determined that her behavior was due to her strict upbringing. Her parents encouraged her to pursue hobbies that would help her come out of her shell, leading Basinger to join the school's cheerleading team.

At the age of 16, Basinger began her career as a fashion model and competed in beauty pageants. She won the title of "Miss Georgia" in 1971, which led her to move to New York City to pursue modeling full-time. While in New York, Basinger also attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre to pursue her acting career.
