Kim Nazaretov: The Godfather of Russian Jazz Education
Early Life and Musical EducationBorn in 1936, Kim Avedikovich Nazaretov's unusual name, "Kim," represented the acronym for "Kommunistichesky Internatsional Molodezhi" (Communist Youth International). This name became inextricably linked to his passion for jazz, a genre considered unconventional in the Soviet Union.
Nazaretov received a comprehensive musical education, graduating from a music school, college, and conservatory. His училищный педагоg, Maria Katz, recognized his classical piano prowess, while his theory professor, Grigory Barsegyan, encouraged his jazz experiments.
Formative Years and Orchestra Creations
After graduating from the conservatory in 1961, Nazaretov founded his first orchestra, "Druzhba," in Kharkiv. The orchestra performed jazz standards from international sources and gained recognition. In 1963, he moved to Rostov-on-Don and joined the Rostov School of Arts.
Inspired by the burgeoning jazz scene in Europe, Nazaretov formed the Rostov Jazz Orchestra in 1964. The orchestra performed in various venues and began to develop a distinctive sound and repertoire.
Establishing Jazz Education in Russia
In 1974, Nazaretov played a pivotal role in establishing the first extracurricular jazz department (EJO) in Rostov-on-Don. This department later became the model for the first EJO in a state music institute, which Nazaretov founded at the Rostov State Music and Pedagogical Institute (RGMPI) in 1982.
Nazaretov's pedagogical efforts led to the creation of renowned jazz musicians and teachers, establishing a strong jazz education system in Russia. He also played a crucial role in the creation of the Coordinating Council for Extracurricular Education in the Culture and Art sector.
Recognition and Accomplishments
Nazaretov's musical talent and contributions to jazz education were widely recognized. In 1985, he received the title of "Honored Artist of the Russian SFSR." He was often invited to serve as a member of juries at jazz festivals and competitions.
In 1989, Nazaretov became the first professor of extracurricular and jazz music in Russia. He established the "Jazz at Noon" monthly subscription concerts and founded the Rostov Jazz Orchestra as a professional ensemble in 1992.
International Acclaim
The Rostov Jazz Orchestra under Nazaretov's direction gained international recognition. They performed at prestigious jazz festivals in Germany, Scotland, and Belgium, garnering acclaim for their "live" and dynamic performances, which infused traditional swing with contemporary influences.
Legacy and Impact
Kim Nazaretov's dedication to jazz education and his passion for the music left an enduring legacy on Russian jazz. He was a pioneer and mentor, creating a path for young musicians to pursue their jazz aspirations.
