Kim Reynolds

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Iowa, Kim Reynolds attended Northwest Missouri State University in the 1970s. She continued her education at Southeastern Community College in Mount Pleasant in the 1980s and pursued an accounting degree at Southwestern Community College in the mid-1990s. In 2010, she enrolled at Iowa State University and earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree in 2016.

Political Career

Reynolds's political journey began with a 14-year tenure as Clark County Treasurer. She was subsequently elected to the Iowa State Senate. During her second year in office, Terry Branstad, who was preparing for his bid for governor, invited Reynolds to run as his lieutenant governor. They were elected in 2010 and reelected in 2014.

Governor of Iowa

On May 24, 2017, following Branstad's transition to a diplomatic role, Reynolds became Governor of Iowa, making her the first woman to hold the office in the state's history. She was elected to a full term as Governor in 2018, narrowly defeating Democrat Fred Hubbell. The election was heavily contested, with Reynolds's support of the so-called "heartbeat bill," one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, being a major campaign issue.

Personal Life

In 1982, Reynolds married Kevin Reynolds, a soil conservationist who worked for over three decades with the United States Department of Agriculture.
