Spencer Cox, Governor of Utah
Early Life and EducationSpencer James Cox was born in Fairview, Utah, and spent his childhood there. He attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and later graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Cox went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law.
Political Career in Utah
After serving in the Sanpete County government, Cox was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2012. In 2013, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Utah by Governor Gary Herbert following the resignation of Greg Bell. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Senate Executive Nominations Committee.
Gubernatorial Campaign and Election
In 2020, Cox entered the Republican primary race for governor, defeating former Utah Governor and Ambassador to China and Russia, Jon Huntsman. With incumbent Governor Herbert opting not to run for re-election, Cox became the official Republican candidate. In the November 2020 gubernatorial election, Cox secured a decisive victory over Democrat Chris Peterson.

On January 4, 2021, Spencer Cox was sworn in as the 18th Governor of Utah. As governor, Cox has focused on issues such as education, economic development, and environmental conservation. He has also navigated the state through the COVID-19 pandemic.
