Cecil La Grenade

Early Life and Education

Cecil La Grenade was born in La Borie, Grenada, on an unrevealed date. The third of five daughters, she is the granddaughter of Mary Louise "Eva" Oliver-Sylvester, the first woman to serve in a British Windward Islands legislature. La Grenade holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of the West Indies, and a Master's and Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Career

As a food scientist trained in the US, La Grenade became a member of the Steering Committee of the Caribbean Export Development Agency in 2006. In 2007, she was appointed Chairman of the Public Service Commission by Governor-General Sir Daniel Williams, a position she held until 2010.

Governor-General of Grenada

On May 7, 2013, La Grenade was appointed Governor-General of Grenada. Her appointment coincided with the passing of Grenada's first female governor, Dame Hilda Bynoe. In July 2014, Queen Elizabeth II awarded La Grenade the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George.

As Governor-General, La Grenade opened the new Grenada Parliamentary Building in 2018. In the same year, she exercised the royal prerogative by appointing members of the defeated National Democratic Congress to the Senate to provide a parliamentary opposition after the New National Party won the March general election by a 15-0 margin.

Legacy

As patron of the Willy Redhead Foundation and the National Trust of Grenada, La Grenade strongly advocates for the restoration of Grenada's architectural heritage, notably Government House and York House, the former Parliament building.

Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, La Grenade became the first Governor-General of Grenada to serve under two monarchs. She represented Grenada at the Queen's state funeral in the United Kingdom.
