Biography of Kirsten Flagstad
Early Life and CareerKirsten Flagstad, a Norwegian opera singer (soprano), was born on July 12, 1895, in Hamar, Norway. She received vocal training from Ellen Schytte-Jacobsen and made her opera debut in Oslo in 1913.
Metropolitan Opera
In 1935, Flagstad made her appearance on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York in Wagner's Valkyrie. From 1935 to 1941, she played the leading role in the revival of Wagner's repertoire at the Metropolitan Opera. Her beautiful voice, combined with excellent vocal technique and outstanding musicality, allowed her to perform extensively not only on stage but also in concerts. Flagstad was equally convincing in opera excerpts and chamber repertoire.
Accusations and Later Life
During World War II, Flagstad remained in German-occupied Norway, which later raised suspicions about her collaboration with the Nazis. However, in 1949, such accusations were deemed unfounded. In 1953, she gave her farewell concert in London but continued her musical activities, directing the Norwegian Opera and providing assistance to young musicians. Flagstad passed away in Oslo on December 7, 1962.
