A British Woman's Triumph Over Syringomyelia: Kirstie Bruntnell

Kirstie Bruntnell, a resilient British woman, was diagnosed with a devastating incurable condition known as syringomyelia. This neurological disorder causes fluid-filled cavities to form within the spinal cord. Due to the proximity of the cysts to her brainstem, surgery was not an option. Despite the bleak prognosis, Bruntnell not only retained the love of her partner but also danced her first dance at their wedding.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

At just 24 years old, Bruntnell and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Adam, had only known each other for three months when she awoke unable to move her legs. Medical examinations revealed the presence of syringomyelia, with cysts dangerously close to her brainstem. As the cavities expanded, they compressed and eventually damaged the nerve fibers connecting her brain to her limbs.

Adam's Unwavering Love

A former mental health nurse from Dorset, Bruntnell admitted, "I was worried about what the diagnosis would mean for me and Adam. We had not been together long, and I thought he would walk away. I actually told him to leave me, even though I loved him. He didn't consider it for a second." Adam, a carpenter, had met Kirstie on an online dating site in 2011. He recalled it as love at first sight. Bruntnell shared, "Online dating brought me the man of my dreams. I moved from West Moors, East Dorset, to Parracombe, North Devon, where he lived, to start our life together. It all happened very quickly."

The Onset of Symptoms

In April 2011, just weeks after the move, Bruntnell began experiencing severe weakness in her lower body. She said, "I collapsed at home. It was completely out of the blue – it felt like my leg couldn't hold me up any longer. I thought I was just tired and hoped that a night in bed would fix it." However, the next morning, Bruntnell realized that she had no sensation below her hips. An ambulance rushed her to Barnstaple District Hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with syringomyelia. She was informed of potential complications such as severe pain, numbness, weakness, bladder and bowel incontinence, and the most daunting prospect: paralysis.

Physiotherapy and a Path Forward

Bruntnell said, "The doctors talked about physiotherapy to help me regain movement. But it was a case of waiting. If the cysts grew even slightly bigger, the paralysis would be irreversible." Kirstie feared that she would become a burden to Adam. With so many plans they had made together, it seemed like their dreams were shattered. Bruntnell recalled, "I told him to find someone else who could give him the life he wanted and promised that I would understand."

Love Triumphs over Adversity

But Adam, deeply in love with Kirstie regardless of her physical challenges, made the life-altering decision not only to stay by her side but to ask for her hand in marriage. Over the next few months, Bruntnell learned to use a motorized wheelchair and navigate short distances on crutches. The couple wed in September 2013. Defying her condition and doctors' doubts, Kirstie walked part of the way down the aisle with the support of her grandfather's arm and later danced their first dance.

Finding Strength in Love

Kirstie reflected, "Adam and I danced to 'It's Your Love' by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. For that one day, I forgot about all the worries. I wanted to do something special for Adam. I'd been building my energy up so that I was confident I could do it." Despite the challenges, Bruntnell considers herself fortunate. While acknowledging that her health may worsen, she cherishes the memories of their wedding day and the unwavering support of her husband, no matter what the future holds.
