Biography of Clara Schabbel
Clara Schabbel was a Soviet intelligence agent who was born in Germany. She was born into a family of four children, with her father Ludwig Schabbel and mother Emilia. She attended the 158th public school and graduated in 1908. Clara then began working at a trading company that dealt with watches, gold, and silver.
Early Activism
From 1912, Clara became actively involved in working with socialist-minded young workers, influenced by her father's political views. In 1914, she joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany. She also attended evening courses at a stenography and typewriting school and worked as a clerk at the "Telefunken" company from 1917.
Political Engagement
Clara's political engagement continued to grow. In 1918, she became a member of the Spartacus League and, in 1919, joined the Communist Party of Germany. She worked as a stenographer at the Berlin Housing Department from 1920 and later at the Communist Youth Union in a publishing house.
Personal Life and Moscow Period
During her time in Berlin, Clara developed a friendship with Henry Robinson, and they had a son named Leo in 1922. From 1924 to mid-1926, Clara lived in Moscow, working as a stenographer for the Communist Youth International. She then returned to Berlin and worked for the German-Russian Society and later as a correspondent and secretary.
Later Years and Arrest
Clara's life took a turn in November 1933 when she started working as a stenographer for various companies. In June 1942, she was approached by Erna Eifler and Wilhelm Fellendorf, who represented Soviet intelligence. They stayed at Clara's apartment and passed on greetings from Robinson. However, on October 18, 1942, Clara was arrested at her Henigsdorf residence.
Imprisonment and Execution
Clara was taken to the Central Gestapo on Prinz Albrecht Strasse and then transferred to the Alth-Moabit detention center. She was later sentenced to death by the Imperial Military Court on January 30, 1943, for aiding the enemy. Despite her plea for clemency being rejected, Clara continued to serve her sentence in a women's camp. She was executed on August 5, 1943, in Plötzensee.
