Klari Tolnay

Clari Tolnai (born Rozsi Tolnay) was born on July 17, 1914 in Budapest, Hungary. She was the daughter of Istvan Tolnay and Eleonora Siess. Her childhood was spent in the small village of Mohora, Nograd county, in her father's estate.
Education
After completing her elementary education, Clari continued her studies at a school in Balassagyarmat. She then spent the next two years at the Beatae Mariae Virginis Institute in Nyiregyhaza. Her final school years were completed at the Business School in Debrecen.
Early Career
From a young age, Clari had a passion for singing and music, which led her to participate in an audition. Renowned actors of that time, Gabor Rajnai, Jenő Heltai, and Sandor Hevesi, were on the jury. Although her first attempt was unsuccessful, Clari did not give up and decided to take acting lessons with Bela Gaal. Soon after, her acting career began at the Hunnia Movie Studio. Her breakthrough role came in the film "Meseauto" and in 1934, she was invited to work at the Vígszínház theater, where she mostly performed supporting roles.
Personal Life
In 1936, Clari married director Akos Ráthonyi and they had a daughter named Zsuzsanna four years later. After the end of World War II in 1945, Akos Ráthonyi left Hungary, leaving Clari and their daughter behind. In 1946, Clari left the Vígszínház theater and joined the Művész Theatre, attracted by a more interesting opportunity.
Later Career and Recognition
Clari Tolnai became one of the directors of the Vígszínház theater in 1947. Alongside Gyula Benko and Istvan Somlo, they revived the theater's past success. However, in 1950, the government disbanded the theater and Clari joined the Madách Theatre, where she remained until her death on October 27, 1998. Throughout her 64-year acting career, Clari immortalized numerous characters on both stage and screen. She was honored with the "Kossuth" prize in 1951 and 1952 for her contribution to the arts.
