Biography of Klaus Augenthaler

Klaus Augenthaler, a German footballer, played as a defender throughout his career. He remained loyal to Bayern Munich his entire life, spending 16 years at the club. He became the German champion seven times and won the cup three times. Augenthaler captained Bayern Munich for seven years, playing a total of 404 matches and scoring 52 goals. He primarily played as a central defender and libero on the football field.

With the German national team, Augenthaler won the World Cup and became a silver medalist. After retiring, he joined Bayern Munich's coaching staff and trained the reserve team. He spent three seasons coaching Austrian GAk and Nuremberg. From 2003 to 2005, he helped Bayer Leverkusen overcome difficulties. In the 2006/07 season, he coached Wolfsburg, but didn't make a significant impact.

On April 24, 1991, in a match against Red Star Belgrade, Augenthaler's own goal in the last minutes prevented Bayern Munich from reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Augenthaler holds the distinction of being the only coach in the German Bundesliga to make four substitutions during a single match. On May 18, 1996, in the final game of the season against Fortuna Düsseldorf, he replaced Bayern Munich's coach, Franz Beckenbauer. During halftime, Augenthaler substituted three outfield players and brought on Michael Probst instead of Oliver Kahn. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, and the referee, Lutz Wagner, did not notice the coach's mistake. However, Fortuna Düsseldorf did not contest the result as both teams had already resolved their tournament tasks.
