Biography of Klaus Sammer

Klaus Sammer is a German football player and coach. He was born in Germany and played for the national team of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He is also the father of Matthias Sammer, who became a European champion and won the Golden Ball award.

Playing Career

Klaus Sammer made his debut in professional football in 1962, playing for the club "Einheit" in Dresden. He spent three seasons in the second division of the GDR, participating in 63 championship matches. In 1965, he transferred to the club "Dynamo" in Dresden, where he played for 10 seasons. He made his debut for the new club on May 27 in a match against "Motor Jena." During his time with Dynamo Dresden, Klaus Sammer was a key defensive player and won two GDR championships and one cup. He ended his professional football career in 1975.

International Career

Klaus Sammer made his debut for the national team of the GDR on November 11, 1970, in a qualifying match for the 1972 European Championship against the Netherlands (1:0). He played a total of 17 matches for the national team.

Coaching Career

Klaus Sammer began his coaching career in 1982, returning to football after a short break, by taking charge of the coaching staff of Dynamo Dresden. During his time with Dynamo, his son Matthias made his debut for the club. Matthias would later become a European champion and win the Golden Ball award. After leaving the post in 1986, Klaus Sammer returned to Dynamo Dresden in 1992, when the club was playing in the unified Bundesliga. However, he left the club again in April 1993.

Achievements

As a player, Klaus Sammer won two GDR championships in 1971 and 1973, and the GDR Cup in 1971.

As a coach, he won the GDR Cup twice in 1984 and 1985.
