Biography of Ko Gon

Ko Gon is a prominent figure in South Korean politics, with a rare combination of extensive experience in both central government and local self-governing bodies. He served as the mayor of Seoul twice, from 1988 to 1990 and from 1998 to 2002, leaving behind a transparent system of managing the capital's economy that was unique in South Korea in terms of citizen control.

During his tenure as mayor, Ko Gon promised stability and continued reforms, and he was known for his skillful administration. His reputation earned him the nomination for the position of Prime Minister of South Korea by President No Mu-hyun. Despite being in a parliament where the opposition party holds power, his candidacy was approved, showing the respect many officials have for him.

In the 1980s, Ko Gon also held positions as the head of a provincial branch of a political party and was a member of the unicameral National Assembly. His extensive experience includes working in both central government and local self-governing bodies.

Ko Gon actively participated in the civil movement to eradicate corruption. After completing his term as mayor, he headed the organization "Transparency International Korea," a private entity dedicated to fighting corruption.

Born on January 2, 1932, in Seoul, Ko Gon studied political science at the prestigious Seoul National University. In 2001, he received an honorary doctorate from Syracuse University in New York.
