Early Life and Military Service
Famous German actor and founder of German dramatic art, Conrad Ekhof, was born on August 12, 1716, in Hamburg, Germany. Little is known about his early life, but he joined the Russian army under General Minich in his teens and fought against the Turks.
Debut and Marriage
In 1740, after leaving the military, Ekhof made his stage debut in the Schönemann troupe in Lüneburg. There, he met his future wife, Sophie Charotte Schröder, the widow of the organist Schröder. They married in Moscow in 1749 after touring Danzig, Saint Petersburg, and Moscow.
Theater Building and Troupe
Upon returning from Russia, Ekhof attempted to build his own theater in Königsberg in 1755. However, this venture resulted in financial ruin. Subsequently, he formed a troupe and toured various German cities.
Hamburg Period
Ekhof's tenure in Hamburg from 1757 to 1767 marked a significant era in German theater. His troupe featured exceptional talents such as Egoof, Hensel Schröder, and Sophie Schulz. Lessing dedicated extensive articles to the company.
Later Years and Legacy
After leaving Hamburg, Ekhof toured again until his death in Hamburg on November 13, 1771. He is considered the founder of the German school of dramatic art and was an exceptional actor, particularly in comedic roles. He endeavored to elevate the public's taste by staging the finest works of German writers.
