Early Life and Childhood
Conrad the Youngerwas born as the eldest son of Duke Conrad I of Carinthia and Matilda of Swabia, belonging to the Salian dynasty. His younger brother, Bruno, later became Bishop of Würzburg.
Childhood and Early Career
Upon his father's death in 1011, young Conrad was not chosen as King of Germany, losing to his cousin, Conrad the Elder. However, he did retain a part of his grandfather's Ottonian lands in the Rhine valley.
Rise to Power and Reign in Carinthia
In 1035, Conrad played a pivotal role in deposing the unpopular Duke Adalbero of Eppenstein, who had been appointed by Emperor Henry II. Conrad then ascended to the throne of Carinthia.
Challenges and Weakening of the Carinthian State
Despite his success, Conrad's rule was marked by the separation of Upper Italian cities (Verona, Udine) and the Carantanian March (present-day Styria) from Carinthia, effectively reducing the state's influence and resources. Local nobles largely supported Adalbero, further weakening Conrad's authority.
Death and Legacy
Conrad's reign ended abruptly with his death in 1039. He was buried in the ancestral tomb of Worms Cathedral. Having no children, Carinthia fell into the direct control of Emperor Henry III, who ruled without a designated duke for several years.
