Constantin Abkhazi: A Distinguished Georgian Military and Political Figure
Early Life and Education
Constantin Abkhazi (Kote Abkhazi) was born into a prominent family in the village of Kardemakhi, Kakheti. His father was Prince Nikoloz Abkhazi, and his mother was Princess Nino Chavchavadze, sister of the acclaimed writer Ilya Chavchavadze. Kote completed his education at the Tbilisi Cadet Corps and the Military School in St. Petersburg.
Military Service in the Russian Army
In 1890, Abkhazi enlisted in the Russian army. He distinguished himself during his tenure, eventually rising to the rank of Major General in 1916. He participated in several socioeconomic projects, including the construction of railways in Georgia. In 1913, he was elected as Marshal of the Nobility of Tiflis Governorate.
World War I and the Russian Duma
With the outbreak of World War I, Abkhazi was mobilized and commanded an artillery brigade. His valor earned him the rank of General-Major. In 1916, he was elected as a deputy in the Russian State Duma from Tiflis Governorate.
Return to Georgia and Founding of the Georgian Democratic Republic
Upon his return to Georgia, Abkhazi attained the rank of Marshal and co-founded the National-Democratic Party. He played a key role in establishing Tbilisi State University in February 1918. In 1919, he was elected to the Georgian Constituent Assembly and became Chairman of the National-Democratic Party in 1920.
Opposition to Soviet Annexation and Its Aftermath
After Georgia's annexation by Soviet Russia, Abkhazi remained in the country and led the military center of the Committee for the Independence of Georgia. However, he was arrested by the GPU in March 1923 and executed on May 20, 1923.
